Sports events coming up in Inverness

Who says the Highlands is just whisky and mountains? That couldn’t be further from the truth! The Scottish Highlands is full of rich tradition, culture, food and sport. Focussing on the latter, in Inverness we are lucky to play host to a wide variety of exciting sports events throughout the year. There is something for everyone to enjoy! 2024 is no exception with many different events taking place throughout the year.

Football fixtures

Various dates

Many of the football fixtures held around Inverness revolve around two championship football rivals, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ross County. These teams are always full of energy and bring the city alive. Check the latest fixtures for Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ross County here.

Inverness Half Marathon and 5K

Sunday 10th March 2024

The Inverness Half Marathon is held in spring, following a scenic route through the city of Inverness. Or, if you’re looking for a shorter distance, the 5K is a great alternative taking place on the same day.

The Loch Ness Etape

Sunday 28th April 2024

Fancy yourself the next Sir Chris Hoy or Sir Bradley Wiggins? In April, Inverness will be hosting the Etape Loch Ness. A 106 km bike race around Loch Ness, not for the faint of heart.

Inverness Highland Games

Saturday 13th July 2024

In July, Inverness plays host to the Inverness Highland Games. Founded in 1822, it is perhaps the most spectacular gathering of its type in Scotland. The perfect event for the entire family with events for everyone to take part in including a Mass Highland Fling, a sight not to be missed.

The games are held at Northern Meeting Park, the world’s oldest known Highland Games stadium.

Ultra X Scotland

4th – 5th May 2024

The Ultra X 110 Scotland is an ultra marathon, taking place in the Scottish Highlands. At 110 km over 2 days, this race goes far beyond the length of a marathon. There is also the option to race on the second day only, which is known as the Ultra X 50 Scotland and is 50 km in length. Both races are an incredible challenge for ultra runners, set against a stunning Highland backdrop.

Great Glen Ultra Marathon

Saturday 6th July 2024

The Great Glen Ultra 73 and 42 span the historic Great Glen. The 73-mile race starts in Fort William, and the shorter 42 race begins in Fort Augustus. Both end here in Inverness. Enjoy amazing views of Loch Ness on this challenging running event. The stunning Highland route includes a mixture of canal towpaths, forest tracks and some roads.

Glenurquhart Highland Gathering and Games

Saturday 24th August 2024

Glenurquhart Highland Games takes place in Drumnadrochit, on the shores of Loch Ness. The games include traditional heavyweight events, such as throwing weights and hammers and tossing the caber. There’s also the Glen Challenge, Hill Race, Kilt Race, track and field events, the Tug o’ War and Mini Highland Games.

Loch Ness Marathon

Sunday 29th September 2024

In September, the streets of Inverness will mark the finish line for quite possibly the world’s most picturesque marathon. The Loch Ness Marathon begins on the southeastern shores of the loch and continues through the stunning Highland scenery to finish in the heart of Inverness. There are also 5K, 10K and Wee Nessie challenges.

The Loch Ness Marathon and River Ness challenges take place in a stunning and iconic setting.
