Highland Museum of Childhood in Strathpeffer

Highland Museum of Childhood

The village of Strathpeffer is around a half-hour drive from our hotel in Inverness and it makes for a great day trip. One of its attractions is the Highland Museum of Childhood, which is located in the villages’ old Victorian railway station. The museum houses a collection of items from childhood, including books and comics, toys and games. It explores the history of play and captures the nostalgia of days gone by. There are also shops and a tea room at the old station.

Museum collections

The Highland Museum of Childhood tells the story of childhood in the Scottish Highlands, from early years to school days. It has an extensive array of children’s books, comics, board games, jigsaws, soft toys, clothing, furniture and more. There is also a huge display of dolls, originally belonging to local resident, Angela Kellie. Collection themes cover birth and baptism, home life, health and nutrition, leisure, child labour and education.

The old station

The museum is located in a charming Victorian railway station. The station dates from 1885 and ceased operating in 1951. It has now been sympathetically restored, retaining many of its original features. The museum opened within the station building in 1992. Also at the station is a lovely coffee shop, which serves cakes and light meals, and a small number of shops and services. There’s a garden with picnic area and plenty of parking nearby.
